1How to do a Day Trip from Florence to Siena  Everyone loves Siena. It is a Tuscan hill town about an hour or so away from Florence. It has a beautiful piazza, great food, and a Duomo on an acid trip (you'll see what I mean when you get there). Whenever we do a small group tour to Florence, we like to take a day trip there. Peru is a spectacular place with a tremendous amount of diversity. There are 103 different ecosystems in the world and Peru has 84 of them. There are 32 different climate systems in the world and 28 can be found in Peru. It is the the most ecologically diverse country in the world. There are jungles, cloud forests, deserts, glaciers, mountains, and much more. Lake Titicaca is just one of those fascinating places in Peru that never fails to amaze me. 8The Firenze Card  Florence is a popular tour destination and it is common to see long lines of people waiting to get into popular sites. When running my tours to Italy, I want my travelers to see all they can see without waiting in line and without having to make an appointment. Many European cities, including Florence, now have a pay-one-price admission card to give the traveler admission to major attractions without waiting in line and in the case of the Firenze card, without the need for appointments. 15My Favorite Paris Hotels  One of the most important decisions in taking a tour of Paris is lodging. For me, location is the most important factor. I look for a hotel that is centrally located, in a safe area, and near transportation options. Next, I want to make sure my Paris hotel is clean, comfortable, and quiet. I don't necessarily look for a luxury Paris hotel, in fact, I prefer smaller, family owned Paris hotels. In 2014 we have scheduled several small group tour to Rome. | 18 | 19How To Avoid Jet Lag  Unless traveling business/first class to Europe, it is nearly impossible to sleep in those cramped coach seats when doing an international flight to Europe. On our small group tours to Paris, Italy, and Spain the majority of my travelers like to arrive a day early in order to be well rested for our tour. But still, jet-lag can be a factor. It is the heart of the Inca Empire. The city is not modern. We are constantly reminded of its ancient heritage by the gigantic stone ruins. Also is evidence of the Spanish colonial era. The only touch of modernity are the fine Cusco restaurants by famous chefs like Astrid & Gaston. Everyone on my tours of Cusco are always fascinated and want to explore it more and more. 29Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery  It seems that everyone wants to be like The Traveling Professor. I introduced my concise book, "The Traveling Professor's Guide to Paris" in 2009, now I see people like Rick Steve's doing "pocket" editions of his books. I started with a "small group tour" concept and now I see other tour companies like Intrepid and Overseas Adventure Tours trying to do the same thing by offering small group tours. However, I think I still offer something these big, impersonal tour operators can't do and I write books that are not for everyone, but they are probably for you. | 30 | 31 | 1A Visit to Padua  Before leading a small group tour of Florence and Venice earlier this year, I took a personal 2-day trip to the Venetto region of Italy. Padua (also known as Padova) is located here, about 30 miles west of Venice. Although Padua is a small city and below the radar of many traveling to Italy, it is rich in interesting and under-rated sites. I like how laid-back Padua is compared to the tourist crowded cities of Florence and Venice.
