Considering:

  • Most flights from the U.S. to Europe are overnight flights.
  • For a good portion of the year, there is at least a 6 hour time difference between the U.S. and Europe.  For instance, if it is 8 a.m. in Paris, it is 2 a.m. in New York.
  • Today’s air travel environment is exhausting, stressful, and uncomfortable.

This all adds up to a serious case of jet lag for some travelers.

I have an acquaintance who is an international flight attendant.  This is her advice to assuage jet lag:

  • Sleep in your own comfortable bed as late as possible until it is time to leave for the airport.
  • Take a nap of about an hour or two on the plane.
  • Have no more than 1 or 2 alcoholic beverages during the flight.
  • Drink plenty of water on the flight.
  • Upon arriving in Paris, grab something to eat, go to the hotel and try to nap again for a couple of hours.
  • Upon awakening, get right on Paris time.  For instance, if you normally eat dinner at 7 p.m. at home, eat dinner at 7 p.m. in Rome.  If you regularly retire at 11 p.m. at home, go to bed at 11 p.m. in Venice.
