Lucca is situated in Tuscany, about an hour and 30 minute  train ride from Florence, through a scenic and pleasant landscape.

Upon arrival at the Lucca train station, it is only a 10 minute walk through the stone at the Porta San Pietro gate.

I would recommend renting a bicycle upon entering the walled-in city.  It's a perfect way to explore the nearly car-free city.

One of the nice things about taking a trip to Lucca on your next tour of Italy is that it can offer a respite from the busier cities of Rome and Florence for example.  There are no "superstar" attractions here which frankly is what makes it so attractive.

But when touring Lucca, here are the places I recommend visiting:

Roman Ampitheater:  there's not much of it left but this is a charming square to have a cafe and do some shopping.
Via Fillungo:   the main pedestrian street.  Stop in the cafes and shops.
Guingi Tower:  At one time, there were scores of towers in Lucca.  This is one of the prettiest.
Puccini's House:  Newly re-opened, opera lovers will make it a destination.
Piazza St. Michele:  Make sure you visit Mr. Tadeucci and taste his Luccan delight, Buccellato, a unique type of Tuscan bread.

Lucca is well-known for having the best food of all in Italy.  If possible, we will have dinner at Giglio's at Piazza del Giglio.   Next to it is a good enoteca.
