The Traveling Professor has been running his small group tours to the Scottish Highlands. Here are his recommendations of what to do, what to see and where to stay on your tour to the Scottish Highlands.
Start in Edinburgh or Glasgow: Either city is fine to start your trip, although The Traveling Professor prefers Edinburgh. We always like to take a day or two to relax before setting out to our next destination. A great introduction to both cities is to take the Hop On, Hop Off bus in either city. In Edinburgh we like the Apex Grassmarket Hotel.
Inverness: The capital of the Scottish Highlands. Stay at the Royal Highlands Hotel, adjacent to the train station, which is great for day trips from Inverness like Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefields, and plenty of places for a whisky tasting. Inverness is a great destination in its own with history that includes the Beatles, a grand castle, and Leakey's classic bookstore.
Kyle of Localsh: Although there is not much in the city itself, it is the perfect jumping off point for Isle of Skye, where lodging is limited. It is also near dramatic Eilean Donan castle.
Fort William: A perfectly pleasant highlands small city, you can't beat staying at the friendly Cruachan Hotel. From there we take the absolutely spectacular train ride down to Glasgow.
Travel By Train: ScotRail has some of the most spectacular train rides in Europe. Of special interest is the ride between Inverness to Kyle of Localsh and the ride between Fort William and Glasgow.
