The Traveling Professor has been running small group tours to Croatia for a couple of years now. The advantage to traveling to Croatia is that it has a beautiful coastline and hundreds of small islands along that coast. It is full of history, great food, lots of culture, and the grand cities of Split, Dubrovnik, and Zagreb are more interesting than you think they are.
Croatia is getting to be a popular tourist destination however. Dubrovnik is packed almost all year round. Split can be crowded too. Attractions like the Plitvice Lakes can be overwhelming. Zagreb is a bit more laid back and manageable.
On our Traveling Professor small group tours to Croatia, we've learned to do it the right way and we are going to pass those tips along to you in this blog post.
Here are my tips for visiting Croatia:
Stay in Zagreb: Zagreb surprised me in that it is a very modern city. There is a new airport and tall buildings surround the historic part of the city. Residents take pride in their beautiful and wide-ranging parks. The city itself has markets, scenic views, interesting museums like the interesting and fun Museum of Broken Relationships. The food is great. A visit to Zagreb won't break the bank either, even if staying at a 4-star hotel.
Island Hop on a Small Ship: We like to stay away from those large cruise ships and take advantage of the small luxury cruisers that island hop up and down the Dalmatian coast. We visit places like Hvar, go to an authentic "konoba" (tavern) for dinner, visit the famous Grgich winery. Small towns like Korucula, Bol, and Mljet. Small ship cruises get travelers away from those big crowds and that's the way we like to do it on The Traveling Professor's small group cruise to Croatia.
Visit Split and Dubrovnik: We like to do day trips to these cities when doing a small ship cruise. Game of Thrones fans will love both Dubrovnik and Split. We're not big fans of staying in these cities because of the crowds, so a day trip is perfect.
