German Christmas Markets

A Good Idea for a 2016 Tour?

Here are some of my observations about traveling to Bavaria in Germany over a long weekend:

  • Flights are cheap and about half full.   It was a very relaxing flight experience and I did not suffer the usual consequences (jet lag, tiredness) that I usually suffer from when flying on a cramped, full flight.
  • We visited family in the small town of Amburg (about 44,000 people) as well as Nuremberg and Regensburg.
  • Christmas markets are a BIG deal here.  They are very festive, have wonderful gifts and entertainment.
  • The food:  Watch Out!   Food is good, hearty, and plentiful.   We loved the brats, beer, glühwein (hot mulled wine), pretzels, and just about anything else they served up.
  • People:  Friendly and welcoming.   They are interesting in that they are sticklers for "following the rules", but we had a lot of fun.

A trip in 2016?  The Traveling Professor is still looking at an itinerary, but we'll probably include Vienna and Salzburg in our plan as well as the German cities of Nuremberg, Regensburg,  and Bamburg.
