We boarded the train at Norway Central station at about noon for the 4.5 hour comfortable journey to Myrdal.  It was spectacular as we went from sea level to over 4,000 snowy feet.  We got off in Myrdal for a rail trip down the even more spectacular Flamsbana Railway.  It descends over 2,800 feet in just about 20 kilometers passing by hundreds of waterfalls and through 20 tunnels.  If you can find a more spectacular train ride, please let us know about it.

We wound up at the base of the Sogneford in Flam.  A few steps from the train is the magnificent Fretheim Lodge.  Open spaces, glass ceilings with absolute luxury.   We chose to relax here where people went hiking and sightseeing for a couple of days.  Again, we are surprised by the lack of that crush of tourists you see in so many other places.

We ended our stay in Flam with a stunning, absolutely stunning fjord cruise on our way to Bergen.  Hundreds of waterfalls, spectacular mountains, beautiful scenery.

Bergen is a seaside city of about 250,000 people.  We stayed for a couple of nights at the elegant Grand Terminus hotel near everything we wanted to see: the colorful seaside village, the fish market, museums and parks.

Our 6 foot 8 guide, Kees gave us a great overview of the city.  Having a professional guide always adds to a tour.
