Probably the best place to stay for a trip to the Amalfi Coast is in Sorrento.   There are a wide variety of hotels and restaurants.  It also has great options for shopping and some small but interesting tourist sites.  We like to stay at the Palazzo Jannuzzi.  It's a quality hotel right in the center of town, yet the rooms are quiet and inviting.

On our way down from Naples to Sorrento, make sure to stop at Cantina del Vesuvio.   It's a winery that serves, hands-down, the best pasta lunch I have ever had.  And if you didn't have too much wine, a tour of Pompeii is a great way to spend 2 hours.

During our stay in Sorrento we always do a couple of day trips.   One is the ferry ride over to beautiful Capri.   We have a special arrangements with the Eco Capri boutique and museum.  However, it's a great day in Capri to take a boat tour around the island and enjoy lunch in Anacapri.

An Amalfi Coast tour is a must-do.   We take the drive to uncrowded and serene Ravello for a cafe and a little bit of shopping.  We frequently stop on our drive down the coast for some photo-ops.   However, we avoid the tourist traps of the villages of Amalfi and Positano, as romantic as they might sound.  And then, there is my all-time favorite Italian lunch overlooking the Amalfi Coast at the dramtic Fattoria Tagliata.

It's never a problem to find a place to relax in Sorrento.  Check out Bar Fauno in the center of town to people watch and enjoy my favorite Italian cocktail, the Negroni.
