Here are The Professor's tips for buying train tickets in Italy.
In general there are two companies to buy tickets from. One is Trenitalia, the government-owned train system. By far, it offers the most extensive and comprehensive train schedules. However, since they are a government-run operation, expect more customer service from the fairly recent private startup Italotreno.
Always buy far in advance. Tickets prices are significantly lower. Sometimes I find prices as low as 60% off the price compared to buying on the day of travel.
Check out the deals. For instance, Trenitalia offers a 2 for 1 special when traveling on Saturdays.
Sometimes coach class is not the cheapest way to go. On about 25% of the time (as long as I shop in advance) I can find premier class tickets that are cheaper than coach class.
Traveling with a group? Group discounts of 20% are available.
