This info is for purchasing tickets on the high speed trains in Italy.
Use the Italian train website: I recommend signing up for an account on www.trenitalia.com even if you plan on making only one purchase. It stores a record of your reservation that you can refer back to.
Purchase tickets in advance: By purchasing in advance (up to 3 months) the savings are phenomenal. A ticket from Milan to Rome might cost 75 euros on the day of departure. However, buy it in advance and it may be as low as 19 euro. Please note that discount tickets may not be refundable.
Use cash if buying on day of departure: lines at ticket windows can be hours long. Vending machines may not take your American credit card, but they will take cash.
Travel on a Saturday: Tickets are 2 for 1 on Saturday travel.
Consider the business class option: look carefully when booking on the website. Sometimes business class is the same price as coach.
