My discovery for getting to Europe on the cheap was when I flew Norwegian Air (www.norwegian.com) last summer.   If flying their regular fleet, the planes are modern, comfortable, and well run.  In addition, they will permit the booking of one-way fares without additional surcharges and fees:

Here are some one-way fares I found:

  • JFK->OSL:  $316.70 on July 4
  • JFK->ORY (Paris):  $415.90 on July 14
  • JFK->CPH:  $303.80 on July 7

Here are some R/T flights:

  • JFK<->CPH:  $539.30 depart June 2 return June 9
  • LAX<->FCO (Rome): $1,142 depart June 14 return June 21
  • FLL<->MAD: $1,012.20 depart July 7 return July 16
