Here are The Traveling Professor's simple rules for finding cheap airfares to Italy.   Follow them so on your next tour to Italy you will have more money to spend on better hotels and great food.

Don't Travel in the Summer:  In June and July, expect to pay at least $1,200 for R/T airfare to Italy.

Use Alternative Airports:   Try Milan Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN).   Other options are Bologna (BLQ) and even Venice (VCE).   I regularly fly into/from these airports and get airfares in the $700 range, round-trip.  There is easy access to any Italian city you want to get to from these airports by high-speed train.

Book About 45-60 Days Before Departure:   I know it sounds nerve-wracking to wait so long, but I find terrific savings waiting to this point to grab a great flight from a major carrier at a great price.
