Here are my tips for finding low-cost airfares:
Use the website www.itasoftware.com: it is by far the most flexible search engine on the web. It lets the traveler select multiple airports, date ranges, routing, and an unbelievable amount of options in selecting flights.
Travel Off-Season: Airfares to Europe are about $1,500 this summer, which is one reason why I usually don't run small group tours to Paris in the summer. However, if booking in the off-season, expect to pay about half of that. For instance, I just booked a flight to Rome in April for $634. Off-season usually runs from about October 20 to May 30 with holidays excluded.
Fly To/From an Alternate Airport: When I was living in New York City, I often took the train down to Washington, DC to save about $400 on my R/T airfare to Peru. When I go to Italy, I fly into Milan which is probably the least expensive city to fly in/out of Italy.
