From the upcoming book, "The Traveling Professor's Guide to Florence" by Professor Steve Solosky and Melanie Wilson, here are 4 top picks for gelato in Florence, Italy:

Gelateria dei Neri. Via dei Neri, 9/11. Santa Croce Neighborhood.

Known for their crazy flavors, we’d suggest trying rice pudding gelato at Gelateria dei Neri if available.  This gelateria is where Melanie once opted to take home a container of 10 flavors as a college kid.

Gelateria della Passera. Via Toscanella, 15/r. Santo Spirito Neighborhood.

A darling gelato shop with handmade crafts adorning the windows and homemade gelato waiting to be chosen.  Try the orange chocolate!

Grom. Via del Campanile, 2. San Giovanni Neighborhood.

Grom is a popular gelateria chain, and in Florence is located in the heart of the tourist district.  Crema di Grom is my favorite with biscuits and Ecuadorian chocolate. Be sure to pay first and then order the gelato.  Grom gelato has gone international, and we even found it in Seoul, South Korea.

Vivoli. Via dell’Isola delle Stinche, 7/r. San Giovanni Neighborhood.

There may be a long wait for Vivoli, the very prominent gelateria on the main shopping street in Florence.  Choose from one of their chocolate flavors, as they are creamy and rich. Vivoli’s history claims it to be the oldest gelato shop in Florence.
