When The Traveling Professor visits the Amalfi Coast on his small group tours, the place to stay is Sorrento.  It is ideally situated because it provides easy access to Ravello, the town of Amalfi and Positano on the coast itself.  It also provides easy access to the island of Capri, which should not be missed when traveling to the Amalfi Coast area.

The best hotels in Sorrento as recommended by The Traveling Professor are listed below.

The Palazzo Januzzi Relais:  This is one of the best located hotels in Sorrento, right on the Piazza Torquato Tasso.  It is more a B&B than a hotel and we like it because travelers get the personal attention they deserve when staying at this family-owned lodging. The rooms are airy and bright, with plenty of room.  Some open up to a balcony where all the action in Sorrento can be viewed.  The breakfast is outstanding with home cooked treats every morning.  When you check-in, tell Arienne and Marianna that The Traveling Professor sent you. We highly recommend the Palazzo Januzzi. The Traveling Professor loves it and so will you.

Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria:  This is one of the great hotels in the world.  With an absolutely stunning view of the Bay of Naples, the location cannot be beat. When driving past the iron gates down the driveway towards this classic hotel, you immediately know you are in for something special. The hotel itself is situated on about 5 acres with swimming pool, spa, and Michelin-starred restaurant.  The staff of this family-owned gem is attentive and courteous.  It has direct access via private elevator to the harbor in order to catch your ferry to Capri.  Splurge and enjoy the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria at the first opportunity you have.
