For purposes of explanation, in this example we will assume the traveler is flying from Houston (IAH) to Venice (VCE) then back home from Paris (CDG) to Houston.
The first question is, what is an open jaw ticket? In the simplest sense, an open jaw ticket is where you fly from a home airport to a destination, then return home from a different destination. An open jaw ticket is also referred to as a multi city ticket.
Some travelers find this a bit confusing since they only have experience in booking round trip tickets from their home airport to a destination and to return home from the same destination. As a possible solution, they may choose to book a one-way ticket from IAH to VCE for example then another one-way ticket from CDG to IAH, but the cost of individual one-way tickets on transatlantic routes can be extremely expensive. How expensive? Well to book a R/T ticket between IAH and CDG departing October 1 and returning October 8 is $845 on American Airlines. But to book a ONE WAY ticket from IAH to CDG on October 1 is a whopping $3721. I know it does not make sense, but that is the price. So, what the travelers wants to do in this case is to book an open jaw ticket.
How to Book an Open Jaw Ticket: First of all, only book on airline websites. They all have a "multi-city" option. On American Airlines, you would book the flight as shown below:
