Here is a quick tip on booking cheaper airfares from The Traveling Professor.

I was recently looking to book R/T airfare from Zagreb, Croatia to Lima, Peru.  When booking a straight R/T flight, the best fare I could find was $868.  However, if we departed from Ljubljana, Slovenia to Lima, then returned from Lima to Zagreb, the fare dropped to $721.  Ljubljana is a 90-minute car (try Uber) ride from Zagreb and about a 2-3 hour bus ride.  Worth it to save $147 each.

We had another couple looking to fly from Newark (EWR) into Zagreb and return from Dubrovnik (DBV) to Newark.  Not only was the fare about $1,400 but on the return flight, there was an overnight layover in Munich.  However, if the couple flew out of Newark and returned to New York's JFK (about an hour ride, depending upon traffic) they could save about $400 each and return from Dubrovnik the same day as departure.  Which flight would you take, considering the inconvenience of having to get back from JFK to EWR?

So, the tip of the day is to search for departing or return airports that are not necessarily the same airports. You may find schedules and prices that are much more friendly to your travel budget and make the airline experience a bit more bearable.
