Book in Advance: Entrance to Machu Picchu is limited to a certain amount of visitors daily. The only way to get to Aguas Calientes (where Machu Picchu is located) is to walk or take the train. There is NO car transportation to Aguas Calientes. Book tickets for Machu Picchu entrance and trains to Aguas Calientes in advance. We have seen people get to Peru, but have been shut out in terms of getting train tickets and Machu Picchu tickets.
Don't Go in December, January, February and the Beginning of March: It is rainy season. Sometimes trains are not available due to the rain.
In Aguas Calientes, Only Eat in Higher-End Restaurants: On our Traveling Professor Small Group Tours to Machu Picchu and Peru, we have practically eliminated all issues related to food by only eating at higher end restaurants.
Stay Overnight in Aguas Calientes for at Least 2 Nights: The biggest mistake I see people make is going to Machu Picchu as a day trip.
