Here are The Professor's picks for 2 sandwich spots in Florence, Italy.
Pane e Toscana Just a few years ago, there were only a couple of sandwich shops in the heart of Florence. Now there are a handful in each neighborhood it seems. Panne e Toscana is a fast and cheap shop with many choices. Cash and coins (only up to about 5 euros for a panini) are a must in this fast paced environment, along with fast and efficient ordering - they do not tolerate long musings over the menu. I’d suggest a warm sandwich with chestnuts and mushrooms - Garfagnino schiacciata to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians as it is a blend of flavors unfamiliar in the US. Do not expect to sit at one of their two tables, however they usually have two benches out front in nice weather. Website: https://www.facebook.com/PaneeToscana/?rf=100768996756718
Address: Borgo degli Albizi, 31, 50122 Firenze FI, Italy https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pane+%26+Toscana/@43.7714562,11.2608003,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xaf317ed1475a94eb?sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjLtcSE6ZPWAhXp5oMKHVITCRsQ_BIIkAEwEA Semel Meet Marco at his sandwich shop, Semel, a tiny space that I would have not noticed off of the Sant'Ambrogio market if I had not been suggested to go there by the wine connoisseur of Touch. Marco, with his broken english, is very friendly to each person who walks into his shop. A list of sandwich fillings in both Italian and English lines many small blackboards, which makes it very easy to order a cheap lunch. At off-peak times, Marco insists that his customers sit and relax as he prepares their meals. Try a glass of wine, ask him for a suggestion, with your pear, truffle, and gorgonzola sandwich.
