Here are some strategies for finding inexpensive and comfortable flights to Europe:

Fly to/from Competitive Airports:  So, if flying from the United States, flying out of one of the New York Airport (JFK, EWR, and even LGA) offers some of the more competitive prices.  When flying into Europe, we find Spain (MAD and BCN) as well as Paris (CDG) some of the most inexpensive airports to fly to/from.  Even if your final destination is not one of the airports listed above, it might be worth your while to fly there and take a train or flight to your final destination.   It is not unusual to find coach fares from New York to Paris or Spain to be in the $400-$500 range, round-trip.

Fly Premium Economy:  Many airlines like American Airlines are rolling out a new product called Premium Economy.  Bigger seats, more comfortable seats, better meals, better mileage rewards, and preferred boarding.  You can actually sleep in Premium Economy.  To give an example, a coach class flight between New York JFK and Madrid departing October 24 and returning November 2 on American Airlines is $465.  Go Premium Economy for $814.  That's a bargain!  Want to go a bit higher? A business class seat will run $2844 on the same flight.  Go with the Premium Economy.
