On our small group tours to Europe, The Traveling Professor uses train travel as much as possible to get from one city to another. Check out his tips on buying high-speed train tickets:

Buy in Advance:  This simple tip usually saves 50% or more off the cost of a train ticket.  Buy more than a month ahead of time to get the best bargains.

First Class is Sometimes Cheaper than Economy:  Always check the price of first-class tickets and compare to economy.  Great deals can be found when booking early and in some cases, higher class tickets can be less than economy tickets.  More common however, is to find first-class tickets only a few more euro than economy tickets.  That is a bargain, especially on longer train rides.

Use Trainline.com or Trainline.eu:  Although not every European country's train systems sell tickets on these websites, they are very good sites for purchasing train tickets.  It is easy to use, the customer service is good, and there are no surcharges like those charged by the highly-not recommended Raileurope.com.
