Here are The Traveling Professor's tips on how to beat the crowds in Italy:
Avoid the Summer Season: The high season in Rome starts after Easter and goes through September and in the beginning of October. Travel in the off-season and get better hotel rates and lower airfares while avoiding the crowds. Avoid school holidays too.
Get the Roma Pass or Firenze Card: These cards (purchased at Tourist Information Offices) allow travelers to skip the hours-long lines at the Colosseum and Forum in Rome. It also permits visitors to skip the long lines in Florence and visit places like the Uffizi Gallery without needing to make an appointment.
Visit at Night: Especially in the summer, Venice can be like Disney World with the crowds. But the cruise people empty out at about 5 pm. You won't exactly have St. Mark's Square to yourself, but it is certainly pleasant. In Rome, the Vatican Museum is open on Friday nights with crowds a fraction of the size of what you will see in the daytime. The more popular museums have evening hours.
Stay Out of the Big Cities: Even during peak periods, hotels in a city like Padua are going to be half the price of Venice with fewer crowds. Venice is a short 30-minute train ride from Padua.
