When purchasing airline tickets, ALWAYS PURCHASE DIRECTLY FROM THE AIRLINE.  Stay away from Expedia, Vayama, Orbitz, and ESPECIALLY any of those "discount" airline ticket websites.

Here are a few true stories:

Passenger X purchases a ticket on a discount website for airline Y.  Airline Y goes bankrupt (does it happen?  It sure does, see here).   Passenger goes back to airline Y for a refund.   Airline Y tells them to go back to the place of purchase.   Place of purchase says go back to the airline.  You know how this story ends.

Passenger X purchases a ticket on discount website for airline Y.   Airline Y changes the schedule but does not advise Passenger X because they did not purchase ticket directly from airline.  Passenger X misses flight.  You know how this story ends too.

Passenger X purchases a ticket on discount website on airline Y on discount website. Passenger calls airline Y for an upgrade. Can't be done because ticket was purchased on website other than the airline's website.

Passenger X purchases ticket on discount website on airline Y.    Flight is cancelled.  Passenger goes to airline for a refund or credit.  Nope.   Passenger has to go to discount website for adjustment.   Passenger spends hours waiting on phone for discount website to respond while those who purchased directly from airline are taken care of at the airport.

Passenger X purchases ticket on discount website on airline Y, because itinerary shown on discount website allows for a tight connection that airline website will not sell.  Passenger misses connection.  Passenger is on the hook, at own expense, for booking a new connecting flight.

Travelers always eliminate a layer of bureaucracy when purchasing directly from the airline.
