Here are The Traveling Professor's Top Tips for planning a trip to Rome:
Stay Near the Train Station: We use good hotels like the Massimo D'Azeglio on our small group tours to Rome. Logistically, it is well situated for transportation options. The train station is about 500 paces away as is the central bus terminal to get you to virtually any destination in the city. There are plenty of restaurants and attractions within walking distance too.
Don't Wait in Line for the Colosseum or Forum: Lines to these attractions can be HOURS long. Who wants to wait in the hot sun while be taunted by performers dressed up as gladiators? Buy the Roma Pass for instant access to the Colosseum and Forum through VIP lines.
Get a Reservation for the Vatican: Don't make the fatal mistake everyone else makes - thinking that getting to the Vatican Museum early in the morning beats the crowds. Everyone else thinks the same way too. We have seen lines at the Vatican Museum stretch for almost a mile at times. Either visit when they are open Friday nights or later in the afternoon. Better yet, get a reservation at http://www.museivaticani.va/content/museivaticani/en.html
Avoid the Summer Heat: It's crowded, hot, and expensive. We love traveling in March and late October/early November.
Stroll Around at Night: Evenings can be the best time of day in Rome. Take the classic stroll from the Spanish Steps, to the Trevi Fountain, to the Pantheon, to Piazza Navona, to Campo di Fiori. Don't forget the gelato!
