Here are 6 more tips from The Traveling Professor:
Subscribe to the Flight Deals Newsletter: Everyday they send out great flight deals. The best deal I got was $1 (but $320 in taxes added on) from New York to Copenhagen one way on AA. Sign up HERE. Buy One-Way Tickets Only if There are No Added Costs: Let’s say a R/T ticket between BOS and DFW is $298 but when purchased separately the tickets are $149 each way. You want to purchase two one way tickets instead of one R/T ticket. The reason is if you need to make a change to any one segment, the ENTIRE ticket is re-priced at the time it is re-issued which can be terribly expensive especially if the outbound flight is coming up soon. For example, the day before an outbound flight I needed to change the return flight which was 34 days later. In addition to the $200 change fee, to re-price the entire R/T ticket at such a late date made the price $760 more expensive because the outbound flight was leaving the next day. But if the tickets were booked separately as one-way, the fee to change the return ticket it only cost $200 because the flight was 34 days later. Insurance: If traveling internationally, you must absolutely, positively have travel health insurance AND emergency medical evacuation insurance. Not having it is insanity. Insurance: If taking more than one international trip a year, purchase health/evacuation and other travel insurance on an annual basis. Get a Good Credit Card: For instance, the MasterCard Aviator offers cancellation, interruption, baggage loss/delay insurance. They do offer medical insurance but not necessarily medical evacuation insurance. Also, there are no foreign transaction fees on this card, saving 3% per purchase. Get Global Entry and Pre-Check: Save yourself a ton of time and the anxiety of waiting in line. It’s $100 for 5 years. And, if you get the right credit card like the Citi Worldwide Elite, they will pay for it.
