Get the Hotel Tonight App: For last minute (up to a week) hotels, there are different ways you can use this smart phone app. One strategy I have is to look up the hotels being offered at the prices offered. Then I will either walk-in, call, or email the hotel to see if they will meet or beat the price if I pay the hotel directly. But the right way to play the Hotel Tonight app is to refer as many people as you can to the app using a referral code (here, use mine - SSOLOSKY) and both YOU and THEM will get $25 off their next booking provided the booking was over $135. Generally, Hotel Tonight uses 3* or better hotels.
Use EuroCheapo.Com for good value, good quality budget hotels. My friend Tom Meyers runs this site. Hotels are well-reviewed and a good variety of properties are listed.
Priceline: I got the best hotel deal ever on Priceline once - $54 a night for a top London hotel. But this is how I did it - first, go to a website called www.biddingfortravel.com and look at the winning bids others won for the type of hotel you are looking for. That will give you an idea of what types of bids to make on Priceline.com.
