Small is beautiful – a perfect description for Salzburg. Why? Because this UNESCO Heritage site offers unique historical buildings, museums and fantastic restaurants and cafes all in walking distance.

Here are some suggestions on museums and restaurants that you should definitely see during your visit:

One very large, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe crowns about 300 feet above the city center. The 900 year old Fortress Hohensalzburg is the symbol of Salzburg and was once built to protect the former Prince Archbishops from invaders. In the museum you can walk through the magnificent 15th century state rooms. Also find Romanesque arcades, weapons, suits of armor, torture instruments and even a real gold treasure while exploring the inside of this big building.
You can enjoy a great view of Salzburg from the restaurants and listen to Mozart’s Music at the evening concerts offered during summer season.

Do not miss to visit the Museum of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Two museums honor him: Mozart’s Birthplace in the shopping street and Mozart’s Residence at Makart square.  Walk through the original rooms in Mozart’s Birthplace in which the Mozart family lived and look at the great collection of portraits, historical instruments, documents, keepsakes and mementos. Among the most famous exhibits are Mozart’s childhood violin, his clavichord, portraits and letters belonging to the Mozart family.
Mozart’s Residence now accommodates a museum showing the various stations of the lives of the Mozart family. Special exhibitions about the family make it worth a visit.

DomQuartier Salzburg offers a fresh insight into the former center of archiepiscopal power. The history of political power, art history and architecture are presented in a unique juxtaposition. Walking through the different rooms you will feel the power that was once used in these rooms to rule, represent and protect Salzburg and it also offers new and impressive outlooks of the city.

A museums walk is inspiring but is also tiring. No problem, there are a lot of restaurants and cafes in Salzburg. But which one is good? Well, here are my favorite places of the city center:
For a great coffee, tea or small lunch break visit Café Tomaselli at the Old market square. It was the first café in Salzburg and is still loved by all locals and tourists. It is a place to see and to be seen. Watch the people on the street while having a delicious snack and drink. Even the American Soldiers used this café during the occupation after WWII. They named it “Forty second street”.

If you want to try the “Original Mozartkugel”, than visit Café Fürst at the Old Market Square. Paul Fürst invented the Mozart chocolate in 1890 already and since that time we cannot live without it. In third generation the family Fürst creates many tasteful desserts – always hard to decide which one NOT to eat.

Dinner time starts at 8 pm in Salzburg. To get a good table it is best to make reservations at the following restaurants:
Dine in one of the oldest Restaurants Europe’s. The Stiftskeller St. Peter is located in the city center and enchants with good design, cuisine, service and location. Partially built into a mountain the restaurant offers traditional and international cuisine for lunch and dinner. For a special evening book the Mozart Dinner concert, a combination of dinner and concert.

Restaurant Elefant is a small traditional restaurant in a 700 year old building. In a traditional setting you can enjoy Austrian and international specialties, good wine and Salzburg’s famous Stiegl beer.
Don’t forget to try “Salzburger Nockerl”, a famous dessert in Salzburg.
