The Traveling Professor Presents

Venice and The Veneto

Padua, Vicenza, Verona, Treviso and Authentic Venice for the Experienced Traveler

8 Nights and 9 Days:  Sunday, May 1 to Monday, May 9

The Traveling Professor has designed a delightful itinerary as an introduction to a new and refreshing Italy full of history, architecture, food, art, culture, and natural beauty.

This tour is for those who have been to Italy before.  It goes past the typical tourist attractions to give travelers a deeper and more authentic travel experience most never see.

For instance, the extraordinary Scrovegni Chapel, the historic university of Galileo, and the markets of Padua are sights not often visited on an Italy tour.  Romeo and Juliet are brought to life in Shakespeare’s romantic Verona.  The memory of Andrea Palladio’s Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza will remain for years.   Go within the ancient walls of Treviso - it’s beauty, food and culture will surprise you.  Experience all this and more with knowledgeable and professional tour guides, providing insight that cannot be found with tour books, phone apps, or audio guides.   If you are a seasoned traveler yearning for a genuine Italian experience, this tour is for you.

TENTATIVE ITINERARY

We will be sending out a trip questionnaire for traveler input to the tour

Sunday, May 1

Arrival in Venice.  It’s been a long day of travel, so after check-in, we do a short guided walking tour of the beautiful Dorsudoro area of Venice followed by dinner. Hotel:  Hotel American Dinesen

Monday, May 2

In the morning we take an in-depth tour not only of the St. Mark’s area of Venice, but go behind the scenes, past the hordes of tourists to see a version of the historic city few tourists see.  Hotel:  Hotel American Dinesen

Tuesday, May 3

A day on your own in Venice.  Each traveler has a museum pass as well as a full-day transportation pass.  You may choose to visit Murano or Burano, snack with the locals at a canal-side cichetti.  How about a visit to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection or the Accademia?  Is there a gondola ride in your future?  Whatever it is you want to do, we’ll help you plan your day. Hotel:  Hotel American Dinesen

Wednesday, May 4

This morning we are picked up at our canal-side hotel for a private water taxi ride down the Grand Canal to the train station for our departure to Padua.   After arrival we’ll do a short orientation of the city followed by a tour of the Scrovegni Chapel.  Perhaps more historically significant than the Sistine Chapel and in the opinion of many, more beautiful, this is a wonderful introduction to Padua.   You will be amazed at the difference of this city compared to touristy Rome or Florence, for instance.  Hotel:  Majestic Hotel Toscanelli

Thursday, May 5

In the morning we have a guided tour of Padua to include the local markets, the Jewish Ghetto, Duomo, Basilica of St. Anthony and the Café Pedrocchi.  Later in the afternoon we have an appointment at the Palazzo Bo to visit the University of Padua.  Historically, it is one of the most significant universities in the world.   During the tour of the university we’ll see the anatomical theater where human dissections were done in secret, hidden from the Church.  We’ll see the podium where Galileo lectured.  Hotel:  Majestic Hotel Toscanelli.

Friday, May 6

In the morning we hop on the train for the 40 minute trip to Vicenza.  It is the home of Andrea Palladio, the most influential and most copied architect in the western world.  After a guided tour of the city to view some of the most famous of Palladio’s works, we visit the stunning Teatro Olimpico.   Enjoy a delicious lunch at one of Vicenza’s famous “self-serve” restaurants.

Upon return, travelers will be anxious to go out on their own to visit many of the other wonders of Padua such as the botanical gardens, Duomo, Palazzo de Ragione, and Basilica of Saint Anthony.  Hotel:  Majestic Hotel Toscanelli.

Saturday, May 7

The 75-minute train ride through the countryside of Italy brings us to the Roman city of Verona.  An expertly guided walking exploration introduces us to Shakespeare’s city.  We will visit the Roman amphitheatre, Juliet’s house and balcony, and the Piazza Bra.  This is a wonderful walking city full of markets, shopping, interesting churches and Roman ruins.  Hotel:  Majestic Hotel Toscanelli.

Sunday, May 8

About an hour away by train, and centuries back in time, lies the walled-in city of Treviso.  This may well be the most memorable part of the tour.  Great food, local markets, castles and moats.  This is Italy!  Hotel:  Majestic Hotel Toscanelli.

Monday, May 9

It’s getaway day.  Enjoy breakfast at our luxurious hotel.  Take a final stroll through one of the four squares in Padua.   Our tour leader will help you off to your next destination.  Arrivederci!
