As I predicted, low-cost airlines are starting to pop-up now that the traditional airlines have gotten greedy. Two of my favorites are Icelandair and Norwegian Airlines. Icelandair has the feature of a "free" stopover in Reykjavik on any of their flights.
Another strategy is to fly into cities where there is competition for flights by discount carriers. Even if you don't want to take a discount carrier, the "big boys" have reduced their fares in order to compete. Some of these cities that are much more expensive to fly into are Copenhagen (CPH), Oslo (OSL), and Milan (MXP). If you can fly into these airports and find a quick way to get to your destination, you will save hundreds. For instance, I have a trip coming up starting in Naples. I saved $600 by flying into Milan and taking the 4 hour train to Naples. Since my flight arrives in Milan at 7 am, I get to Naples (then on to Sorrento) just in time to check in.
