We flew from Bergen to Iceland on IcelandAir. I think a few airlines could learn a lesson or two from IcelandAir. The planes were modern and clean at very reasonable prices.
Upon arrival in Reykjavik we took the hour ride to the Holt Hotel. Although it was a gloomy day, the Holt is a welcoming place, with a great breakfast, a great bar, and a courteous staff. It was just a few blocks outside of what can be a noisy downtown area, and we all got a good sleep.
By the way, the sun went down at about midnight and came back up before 3 a.m. every day we were there. It never really gets dark in Iceland at that time of year.
Our first tour was of the Golden Circle. I have never seen a more powerful waterfall than the Gullfoss waterfall. We experienced hot springs and geysers that were more than amazing. The ancient Viking Parliament area of Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site rivals any US national park you have been to.
Our next day included a tour of the varied south shore of Iceland. I had my first opportunity to walk on a glacier. Imagine on the same day walking on a black lava beach. Then there was the unpronounceable but beautiful Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Waterfalls, waterfalls and even more waterfalls were all about us. The 200 foot high Skógafoss waterfall, and the narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall were simply amazing.
What impressed me that although this was peak season in Iceland, we never felt the press of crowds.
