The answer is plain and simple: people don't sign up for the tour. Although it is one of the most requested tours on my itinerary, I simply cannot get people to commit to a trip. I'm not sure why since Machu Picchu is listed at the top of everyone's bucket list in terms of destinations to go to.
Here are the reasons why I hear people do not want to go:
Peru is Dangerous: Simply not true. Culturally, Peruvian people have a high standard of honesty. They are friendly. On all my tours to Peru we have had zero instances of crime or petty theft.
The Altitude: In Cusco, the altitude is about 13,000 feet. Yes, about 10% of travelers suffer from altitude sickness. However, it rarely lasts more than 18 hours. Machu Picchu is actually at a much lower altitude and rarely do we have instances of altitude sickness there.
Expensive: Again, not true. It is one of the top travel bargains available.
It is "Third World": I am not sure what that means, but we stay at first-class, world-class hotels. The culinary scene is one of the best in the world. Communications systems are great - even in the most remote parts of Peru.
So, we'll give Peru a rest, at least for a year unless I hear from a group of at least 12 people who want to go. However, if you do want me to help plan a trip for you there, please contact me at info@travelingprofessor.com and I will be happy to help you out.
