Tip #1:  For most people, the gateway to Machu Picchu (the Machu Picchu train station is actually in Aguas Calientes) is through Cusco.   While there is no direct train service from Cusco, the traveler can either depart and return to/from either the Poroy train station or the Ollantaytambo station.  I prefer the Poroy train station since it is only about a half hour ride outside of Cusco.  Departing from Ollantaytambo requires about a 90 minute harrowing bus ride over mountains with sharp cliffs albeit dramatic scenery.    Not too pleasant in bad weather.   I'll do the Poroy train any day.

Tip #2:  There are 3 trains available to tourists.  One of them, the Hiram Bingham is horribly expensive.  I wouldn't do it.  The Expedition and Vistadome trains are the probable choices for all others traveling to Machu Picchu.  The difference between the two is hardly distinguishable.   In fact, on my small group tours to Peru and Machu Picchu, we might take the Expedition train one way and the Vistadome train the other way, and most people never notice the difference.   For the record though, the Vistadome train to/from Machu Picchu does have leather seats and there is usually a little bit better snack and a fashion show featuring Peruvian souvenirs and goods.

Tip #3:  Get train tickets in advance.   Don't count on getting seats on a train upon arrival in Peru.   I always suggest purchasing online in advance at www.perurail.com
