Markets in Rome

Two of My Favorite Markets are Quite Different

My favorite Roman markets are:

Campo di Fiori:  This is probably Rome's favorite open-air market.   Visit here in the morning to explore the vendors selling fruits, vegetables, flowers, and authentic Italian goods like pasta and limoncello from their tented stations.   Located in a square surrounded by ancient buildings, listen to the vendors hawking their wares.   I like this market because it is less touristy than some of the others I have seen in Rome.   Oh, and don't forget, to stop by at Il Forno Campo de' Fiori, the best pizza spot in all of Rome, just behind the fountain.

Piazza Navona:  Much different from Campo di Fiori in terms of what is sold here, some will even argue if Piazza Navona is a market at all.   However, there are plenty of vendors selling sketches and paintings of familiar Roman sites.  Musicians will be performing and encouraging the purchase of their latest CD's.   It is much more touristy than the Campo di Fiori but in some ways much more interesting.  In the center of what was formerly a stadium (the roadway around it's circumference traces an old chariot track) Bernini's "Fountain of the Four Rivers" is at its center.   One thing not to miss:  a chocolately tartuffo from famous Il Scalini, one of the many restaurants on the square's perimeter.
