Hotel Nord:  located near the train station, with easy access to bus and metro transportation, I like the Hotel Nord for its old world charm, a wonderful breakfast, and it's rooftop bar/dining area.   It is about a 6-minute walk from the train station.  The advantage to being close to the Termini bus station is that when getting on a bus, it will probably be empty giving the rider a comfortable seat.    The rooms are recently renovated, they are of decent size too.   The rooftop bar is a welcome sight after a long day of touring.   Although it is a family-owned hotel, the rooms are plentiful in this 3-star property that I feel should be rated as a 4-star hotel.  Website:  http://www.romehotelnord.it/en

Aventino Guest House:  I like the homey feel of this small guest house.  My long-time friend Alessandro, formerly of the Bellesuite Rome, runs the place.   It's located close to the Colosseum.  It's got a beautiful patio and is a relaxing refuge after a day of touring.   Here is the website:  http://www.aventinoguesthouse.com/
